Sleeping Driver

Oroville, CA - January 6, 2015

Two drivers are lucky to be alive after a woman fell asleep at the wheel causing a crash on Highway 70 in Oroville early Tuesday morning.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident happened around 5 a.m. on Highway 70 near the Cottonwood Drive overpass. Officers say a Paradise woman likely fell asleep at the wheel and accidentally accelerated her Mazda 6 into the back of a Ford Explorer. The impact from the crash caused the explorer to hit the center divider then move across the highway ending up on its side underneath the overpass.

The man driving the Explorer was transported to a local hospital with a laceration on his face, and ankle pain, his injuries are not considered life threatening. The woman driving the Mazda was not injured in the crash.

Southbound lanes on Highway 70 were closed for over an hour this morning while authorities cleared the scene and conducted an investigation. CHP officials say the driver of the Mazda will likely be cited for her role in the crash.
