Single Vehicle Stabilization

Firefighters from Lakeside’s Lake Jennings fire station were called to assist Alpine Fire with a vehicle versus tree in Harbison Canyon late on December 10, 2011. The small car had apparently left the roadway at a high speed and struck an oak tree high up an embankment. In addition to the need for stabilization, two occupants were trapped in the vehicle and required extrication.

Firefighters from Rescue 3 and Medic 3 (Lakeside) worked with the Engine 17 crew (Alpine) to stabilize the vehicle and then used hydraulic rescue tools to “pop” a rear door. Both occupants were awake and talking to crews with what appeared to be minor injuries. The CHP is investigating the accident.

The stabilization struts known as “Rescue 42’s” were purchased as part of a federal grant for rescue equipment.
