Kern County Fire Department , Shafter, CA –
September 2, 2009
Tuesday, September 2nd at approximately 4:34 P.M., 2 pickup trucks were involved in a rollover accident. Approximately 10 firefighters arrived on scene, 2 victims were pinned in.
Upon arrival, fire crews were faced with 2 vehicles which had rolled over, one came to rest on its roof the other its side, this vehicle had one victim trapped inside. Fire crews used a telescopic stabilization device (“Rescue 42’s”) on this vehicle to ensure that it did not fall on firefighters. Fire crews then used hydraulic rescue equipment (“Jaws of Life”) to remove the roof and the steering wheel from the vehicle. This enabled the victim to be released, who was subsequently transferred to a local area hospital by ground ambulance. The other victim remained at the scene pending the arrival of the Kern County Coroner.
The rescue equipment used at this extrication was purchased through a grant. Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway traffic Safety Administration. |
